Pickleball Paddle Specs for Club Buyers: Face, Core and Construction

Buying one paddle or a club set of twelve, only three specs matter - how to read them and order right first time.

At a glance: Whether you're buying one paddle or a club set of twelve, only three specifications genuinely matter: the face material (carbon over fibreglass, every time), the core thickness (16mm for control, 14mm for power) and the construction (thermoformed for durability and pop). Everything else on the box is marketing.

Start with the face: carbon earns its keep

Wood and fibreglass faces are what give cheap paddles their dead, unpredictable feel. A carbon fibre face is stiffer, rebounds consistently and bites the ball for spin – and it's graded: T700 is the dependable entry weave, 3K steps up in stiffness and liveliness, and 18K is the premium weave with the most feedback. AIXO builds a paddle series on each grade: the Ghost (T700, ~£40), the Scorpion (3K, ~£64) and the Reaper (18K, ~£96).

Then the core: 16mm or 14mm

Inside every modern paddle is a polymer honeycomb core, and its thickness sets the character. Sixteen millimetres soaks up pace – a larger sweet spot, softer touch, forgiving dinks and resets – which is why 16mm is the right call for beginners and for shared club paddles that a dozen different hands will use. Fourteen millimetres returns energy faster: more pop and attacking speed for players who consistently find the middle.

Finally the build: thermoformed vs cold-pressed

A thermoformed paddle is moulded into a single sealed unit under heat and pressure, with foam injected around the perimeter – the result is a tougher paddle with a wider sweet spot and extra pop, which is exactly what pro paddles use. Cold-pressed builds are softer-feeling and cheaper. If your members play in sanctioned leagues, check for USAPA approval: AIXO's Scorpion and Reaper both carry it.

Matching spec to player – and to club orders

Beginners and loan sets: 16mm T700 – the Ghost. League squads: 14mm thermoformed 3K – the Scorpion. Your strongest attackers: the 18K Reaper. Ordering for a group and can't decide? FAQ

What should a club budget per paddle?

Around £40 per paddle buys a genuine carbon face that won't need replacing next season. Below £25 you're buying toys; well past £100 you're paying for someone's marketing.

Does paddle weight matter for shared sets?

Mid-weight (roughly 7.8–8.3oz) suits the widest range of hands – the sensible choice when many members share the same paddles.

Which grip size for a club order?

Go smaller – around 4 1/4" fits most adults, and individuals can build up with an overgrip far more easily than they can shave one down.
